How To Tune Up Your Lawn Mower

by Jeremy HIPA 06 Feb 2023 0 Comments

Performing a regular tune-up on a lawn mower is essential for keeping it running properly and, perhaps even more importantly, allowing it to last a very long time. But what do you need to do to perform a tune-up? This blog will show you the necessary steps you will take for a lawn mower tune-up, and how to get it done!

You should do a tune-up at least once a year on your mower to keep it running well. Here we are going to show you how to replace the spark plug, the air filter, the fuel filter, change the oil and replace the blade.

Air Filter

Air filter is located behind the air filter cover. Remove it and then you can remove the air filter. Now you can install the new air filter and reinstall the air filter cover.

Spark Plug

Remove the spark plug boot from the spark plug. Then you can use a socket wrench to remove the spark plug. Before you install the new spark plug you nee to set the gap between the electrodes according to the manufacturer’s manual. You can use a gap tool to set the gap by sliding the tool between the electrodes and take a measurement. Then tap on the upper electrode and check it again. Now you can install the new spark plug into the engine and secure it with the socket wrench. Last you can reinstall the boot.

Fuel Filter

You can start by removing the fuel line from the fuel shut off valve. Pull back the clamp, pull off the fuel line and now you can remove it from the shut off valve. Now drain the fuel from the fuel tank into a container. With the gas drained out from the tank, now you can remove the fuel line from the tank and remove the fuel filter from the fuel line. Then you can install the new fuel filter by inserting it into the fuel tank nipple and reinstall the fuel line. Reconnect the fuel line to the fuel shut off valve. Now you can pour the gas back into the gas tank.

Oil

Tip the mower to keep the carburetor upward, then remove the dipstick and drain the oil from the engine, otherwise fuel will leak out of the carburetor. Also it is best if you wait until the mower is almost out of fuel, lost of new lawn mowers use a carbon gas cap if gas gets into the gas cap, it will plug it and the tank won’t vent properly. Now you can add fresh oil to the engine. After you add, you need to wait a second for the oil to settle into the crankcase. Then replace and secure the dipstick.

Blades

Most mowers just have a single blade while others have two. You need to inspect the edges of the blades, if they are dull or if there is nicks you will either replace the blades or sharpen the blades. Now you can reinstall the sharpened or new blades. You can use a torque wrench to torque the blade bolts to the manufactured specification.

That’s all it takes for you to turn up your lawnmower and now your mower should be ready for use.
