Rewind Spring Replacement On A Leaf Blower

by Jeremy HIPA 05 Jan 2023 0 Comments

This blog is a step-by-step instruction for replacing the rewind spring on a Husqvarna leaf blower. The most common reasons for replacing the rewind spring are if the rope will not rewind or if the spring itself is broken.

Replacement

Before you begin the replacement, you need to make sure the engine has cooled and remove the wire and boot from the spark plug to prevent the engine from accidentally starting. We recommend performing this procedure with little or no fuel in the tank.
Step 1: Use a t27 Torx bit or a flathead screwdriver to unthread the screws to release the recoil starter.
Step 2: Secure the starter rope then untie the knot at the end, remove the handle and now hold the recoil starter pulley and slowly release the tension on the spring.
Step 3: Remove the starter assembly screw and washer and unthread the starter cam. Gently remove the recoil starter pulley and the coiled spring underneath. Be aware the spring can cause injury so use eye protection and a towel to help contain the spring. And you are now ready to install the new rewind spring.
Step 4: Align the hook in the spring with the slot in the starter housing and hold the spring firmly in place as you remove the wire retainer. This may be difficult, you need to make sure the rope is secured in the knotch.
Step 5: Align the pulley and rotate it clockwise until the pulley sets into place then rotate counterclockwise until the spring catches onto the pulley tab.
Step 6: Replace the starter cam then hold the pulley as you secure the screw and washer. Now rotate the pulley counterclockwise approximately three or four times to put tension on the spring. Align the notch in the pulley with the hole in the starter housing and feed the rope through the housing.
Step 7: Insert the end of the rope through the handle and tie a knot to secure. You need to make sure the knot is seated in the handle and confirm that the recoil assembly rotates freely. Reposition the recoil starter on the engine then replace the screws to secure.

With the repair completed, reattach the wire in boot to the spark plug and your leaf blower should be ready for use.
