Snow Blower

4 Common Reasons Why Your Snowblower Auger Not Throwing Snow

by HIPA Jeremy 14 Nov 2022 0 Comments

Snow blower auger not throwing snow? This blog provides information on how to troubleshoot a snow blower and the most likely defective parts associated with this problem.

Reasons

Here are the top 4 most probable causes.

1.Broken shear bolt or pin
The shear bolt or pin is inserted through the auger axle sleeve, locking the sleeve in place with the auger drive axle. The bolts or pins are designed to break in half, if the auger hits a large rock or a chunk of ice, to prevent damage to the engine and transmission, a broken shear bolt or pin will prevent the auger from turning and throwing the snow. Once a shear bolt or pin breaks, a new one will need to be installed.

2.Worn auger assembly
The action of the rotating auger is what throws the snow. If the shear bolts or pins are intact, it is possible that some part of the auger assembly has worn out. On some models, the individual auger blades can be replaced, but you may need to replace the entire assembly.

3.Damaged belt
The COG or V-belt is what drives the auger when the drive pulley or pulleys are engaged. If the belt or belts are worn stretched or broken, the auger will not be able to rotate. Install a new belt or belts to solve the problem.

4.Defective impeller
Dual stage snowblowers use an impeller, in addition to the auger, to help propel the snow through the chute. If the auger and belts are all working properly, the impeller could be jammed or damaged and may need to be replaced.
