Recoil Starter Replacement On A Small Engine

by Jeremy HIPA 11 Dec 2022 0 Comments

This blog is a step-by-step instruction for replacing the recoil starter on a Honda lawn mower engine. The most common reasons for replacing the recoil starter is if the engine won’t start.

Replacement

Before you begin the replacement, you need to make sure the engine has cooled and remove the wire and boot from the spark plug to prevent the engine from accidentally starting.
Step 1: Loosen the starter rope retainer wing nut, so you can release the rope from the retainer and allow it to rewind onto the starter pulley.
Step 2: Now use the 10 millimeter socket to unthread the three mounting nuts securing the recoil starter. With the nuts removed, you can lift the old starter off to install the new recoil starter.
Step 3: Align the new recoil starter on the mounting posts. So the starter rope and handle faces the right rear corner of the engine cover.
Step 4: Thread and tighten the mounting nuts.

with the new starter secured, depress the bale arm and gently extend the starter rope. Position the starter rope handle in the retainer then tighten the wing nut. Reattach the wire and boot to the spark plug. Now your engine should be ready for use.
